Introduction to Birth Chart Reading ✨🔮
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a snapshot of the positions of the planets in the zodiac signs and houses at the precise moment and location of your birth. See the example below: the birth chart of George Clooney.
To interpret the birth chart, you need to memorize the symbols below:
To provide an exact position for all the planets, the birth chart wheel is divided into 360° (degrees). Because there are 12 zodiac signs, each zodiac sign covers 30°.
In the case of the birth chart above, referring to George Clooney, the Sun was positioned at 15° in Taurus, the Moon was at 27° in Capricorn near Saturn, which was at 29°, and so on.
The birth chart is created with the assumption that Earth is at the center of the universe, observing the sky at the moment of a person’s birth and recording the positions of the planets in our solar system—Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—against the backdrop of the broader universe. This backdrop consists of countless stars grouped into 12 zodiac constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
Who Created This Sort of Representation and Why?
The reason ancient civilizations began recording the positions of planets at birth was to develop a method to understand a person’s nature and identify their talents—essentially, to determine what they excelled at.
In ancient times, when resources were scarce, it was crucial to ascertain whether someone was suited to be a warrior, a commander, or a blacksmith, thereby finding the best role for each individual in society. Consequently, they noted that newborns with the Sun in Aries were likely to grow up wanting to be the first to start, initiating exciting projects and ventures, while those with the Sun in Gemini aimed to become skilled talkers, excelling as explainers.
Today, we have more tools to understand an individual's talents, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or Clifton StrengthsFinder, among others.
All these tools, including birth chart readings, are designed to help understand a person’s nature and support life choices. Since ancient times, it has been observed that when an individual lacks self-awareness, they are likely to make poor decisions.
With a vast array of tools, you might wonder which tool to use and why birth chart reading is categorized as a non-scientific tool.
The primary distinction between scientific methods for understanding a person's nature and birth chart readings is that scientific methods are generally simpler and more focused on specific areas of study.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
Field of Use: Psychology, Career Development, Personal Growth
Purpose: Assesses personality types based on preferences (e.g., introversion vs. extraversion) to guide self-awareness and career choices.
Clifton StrengthsFinder
Field of Use: Career Development, Human Resources, Leadership Training
Purpose: Identifies individual strengths to enhance workplace performance and team dynamics.
Aptitude Tests (e.g., Differential Aptitude Test - DAT)
Field of Use: Education, Career Counseling
Purpose: Measures cognitive abilities and skills (e.g., verbal reasoning, numerical ability) to inform educational paths or job suitability.
Neuropsychological Tests (e.g., Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - WAIS)
Field of Use: Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology
Purpose: Evaluates cognitive functions like memory and problem-solving, often for diagnosing conditions or assessing learning potential.
Unlike these tests, the birth chart can provide indications for any area of life. The birth chart is divided into 12 houses, each covering various topics, and by assessing the houses and planets, you can receive a wide range of indications, for example:
Which parts of the body or organs may develop issues, such as inflammations or chronic conditions.
Whether you should marry, remain in a relationship without getting married or stay single.
Whether you may face challenges raising kids.
What your life purpose might be, etc.
The birth chart is one of the most ancient and comprehensive tools for understanding yourself, offering insights into how you behave in various areas of life.
If the Birth Chart is so Powerful, why do Academics and Scientists not use it?
The reason it is dismissed by academics and scientists is that no empirical evidence or mechanism explains the correlation between the positions of planets in the constellations and an individual's life.
Additionally, collective events can override birth chart indications; for instance, transits in the 8th house may suggest trauma, but when collective traumatic events occur, such as wars or pandemics, not all individuals involved have transits in the 8th house.
Due to these reasons, birth chart reading has been abandoned by academics and scientists since the Enlightenment period (17th–18th century). Before this, many scientists were likely to be astrologers too.
As a result, the field of astrology remains unregulated and chaotic today.
Levels of Professional Astrology
Level 1: You not only know how to cast a birth chart, but, more importantly, you can rectify the birth chart. You can rectify the time of birth, which may be inaccurate, and you know how to choose the appropriate zodiac (Tropical or Sidereal) and house system (Whole, Placidus, Equal, etc.). You are able to describe the meanings of planets in zodiac signs and houses and how they interact with each other and with the houses.
Level 2: Once you have determined the birth chart settings (zodiac and house system) that accurately reflect your personality, you can assess the condition of the planets using Hellenistic or Vedic astrology methods, and then proceed to evaluate the houses. You are able to interpret the outcomes of various life topics such as education, marriage, career, and wealth.
Level 3: By analyzing planetary transits and utilizing other techniques such as profections and progressions/dashas, you can predict when major themes will become relevant in life. For example, you may predict when you'll get married, have children, achieve professional success or have troubles.
Level 4: You are able to tailor karma remedies to improve the condition of planets in a poor state and to enhance the results of the other planets.
